Paperback edition

The Shetland islands, lying to the north of Scotland, occupy a strategic position in the north Atlantic. Battle fleets as well as trading and fishing vessels have sheltered in its anchorages, and events in Britain and Europe have had their impact on island life. Built in 1724 on the shores of the great natural harbour of Bressay Sound, Gardie House holds an extensive family archive. From its contents comes the story of the house’s passage through turbulent times and the everyday life of the generations who lived in and around it. These have included a diverse set of individuals, ranging from Magnus Henderson, who built the house on the proceeds of his fish export business, to Norman Cameron, a veteran of the Somme; and the people who lived and worked around them, from Marion Cowwife, who kept the “big hoose” supplied with milk, to Laurence Laurenson, estate tenant for 77 years at Norwick in Unst. The house has also played host to prominent visitors to Shetland, from Sir Walter Scott, who dined at Gardie during his tour of the Scottish islands in 1814, to Sir John Betjeman, who described the drawingroom as among the finest rooms in Scotland. What emerges is a portrait of the complexity of island life, set against the social and economic changes of the house’s almost three centuries. Most of the documents in this book have never before been published; some have only recently been discovered. The book is profusely illustrated with maps and paintings, mostly from the Gardie House Archive. Wendy Scott is a graduate of Edinburgh University and was formerly Reporter to Shetland Children’s Panel. She lived at Gardie House for more than thirty years, when she and her husband bought the old house back to life, and restored the derelict walled gardens. She has published many articles on Shetland history and gardening.

Works well.
Color: 2-Speed Rechargeable Set with Base
Close to 5 stars. Only minor complaint is somewhat shorter battery life then expected. But since it is rechargeable, not a big deal. Like the adjustable grinder and the clear container so you can see how much it has.

Great salt and pepper set!
Color: 2-Speed Rechargeable Set with Base
Great salt and pepper set! I love that it has a light that makes it easier to see how much is coming out. Very easy to use, easy to fill, nice selection of grind sizes. It is also nice that it has a base to hold it because there is a very small amount of salt that comes off the bottom so it keeps it from going on the counter while not in use - it's not leaking, just leftover residue from the grind you have just finished.

They’re nice… if they work…
Color: 2-Speed Rechargeable Set with Base
I ordered four of these grinders and two of them broke down while a third never started up. I am honestly disappointed in the failure rate of these otherwise nice grinders. If only one grinder in a two-pack failed, I would’ve just taken it on the chin and moved on. But three out of four total is unacceptable. I like the way they look, and the grind speed and settings are nice. But there’s a serious durability problem they need to fix.

These are great! They operate by pressing the top surface. Best i've had, and I've had a few! Very happy.

Highly recommend!
Color: 2-Speed Rechargeable Set with Base
This electric mill set is great! The mills stay charged longer than I ever expected, and the operation is consistently very good. Since purchasing these four months ago, I’ve only recharged them once…and our family uses them nearly every day. Having the activator button on the top is the best…no accidental messes like the ones with activators on the side that can be inadvertently touched when grasping the mill. Having a stand to catch the small grind remnants also keeps your counters clean. They are a perfect height—large enough to hold significant product and small enough to not tip over. I also purchased a set for my parents, and they love them as well. Great product!
