Castanea sativa, de tamme kastanje, is een grote bladverliezende boom die bekend staat om zijn eetbare kastanjes en decoratieve waarde. De boom kan volwassen hoogtes bereiken van 10–20 meter, afhankelijk van de standplaats en verzorging.

Bloeiperiode

De tamme kastanje bloeit in de vroege zomer, meestal in juni en juli. De crème‑witte bloemen trekken bijen en andere bestuivers aan, wat bijdraagt aan een goede vruchtvorming.

Standplaats & bodem

Deze boom groeit het beste op een zonnige tot halfbeschaduwde plek in goed doorlatende, vruchtbare grond. Licht zure tot neutrale bodems worden goed verdragen, terwijl te natte grond wortelproblemen kan veroorzaken.

Verzorging

  • Water: Jonge bomen regelmatig water geven; volwassen bomen zijn redelijk droogtebestendig.
  • Snoei: Snoei in de winter om de vorm te behouden en dode of kruisende takken te verwijderen.
  • Meststof: Toepassing van een gebalanceerde meststof in het voorjaar bevordert gezonde groei en vruchtvorming.

Zelfbestuiving

De tamme kastanje is gedeeltelijk zelfbestuivend. Hoewel een enkele boom vruchten kan vormen, verhoogt kruisbestuiving met andere tamme kastanjes de opbrengst aanzienlijk.

Oogst van kastanjes

De eetbare kastanjes rijpen in september–oktober. Ze zitten in een stekelige bolster die openspringt als de noten rijp zijn. De vruchten zijn geschikt voor vers gebruik of verwerking in gerechten.

Toepassingen

Castanea sativa is geschikt voor tuinen, boomgaarden en grotere landschapsprojecten. De boom levert eetbare kastanjes, trekt bestuivers aan en heeft een rechte stam die op lange termijn ook voor houtproductie gebruikt kan worden. The band is the same generally accepted, plastic-like band you will find in less expensive watches but it's bright color makes it stand out. The mini dials on the watch face do not move, so I personally would not pay over $100 for any similar watch. (It's original asking price was near 3x's that). I'm happy with it, which is why I still gave it 4 stars. At a low price, I would buy this in other colors to match my outfits.

I've only had the watch for a day but wanted to leave a quick review on it to share a couple of notes. So far it keeps VERY good time, better than any of the automatics I own (including a Rolex Submariner, Tag Heuer Aquaracer, Tag Heuer Formula One, and several other sub $1k watches). I set it to an atomic time app on my phone yesterday and 24 hours later it's still SPOT on - hasn't gained/lost even a 1/10 of a second. I was shocked to see it's kept PERFECT time for the last day, I'm really blown away so far. I've worn it the entire time, we'll see how well it keeps time while being stored in a winder. This picture shown is the watch with a 22mm leather band on it, fit's without any issues (just need to squeeze in the leather a tad). I doubt it would work with a 22mm metal bracelet, but leather works great. Just FYI since the 21mm lug width is kind of odd. The face isn't quite a lustrious as the images make it look, but it's still a great-looking watch. For a sub $1000 automatic you can't go wrong, this is a fantastic watch at a great price. It'll be my daily driver for some time I'm sure. If I have any issues in the future I'll update the review.
