Growing Starmaker Series Nicotiana Garden Seeds

  • Taxonomy: Nicotiana alata
  • Other Names: Jasmine Tobacco, Sweet Tobacco, Winged Tobacco, and Tanbaku
  • Seed Type: Annual
  • Sow Indoors or Outdoors: Most home gardens do not have the warm tropic conditions to sow Starmaker Series nicotiana seeds directly. However, for annual blooming, start nicotiana seeds indoors 6 – 8 weeks before final frost. Seeds will germinate with full lighting in 14 – 21 days. Once germinated, transplant Starmaker seedlings when there are two sets of true leaves to an indoor container or harden off if transplanting outside to a warm yet shaded spot in the garden. Do not plant near vegetable gardens with other members of the nightshade family (i.e eggplant, tomato, potato, or peppers) because of susceptibility to common viruses.
  • Days to Maturity: 63 – 70 days
  • Hardiness Zone: 9 – 11
  • Planting Depth: Plant 2 – 3 seeds ¼” deep
  • Plant Spacing: 6 – 12”
  • Growth Habit: 12” tall semi-dwarfed bushy upright with a 10” spread of 2” star-shaped blooms
  • Soil Preference: Consistently moist, organically rich, well-drained
  • Light Preference: Full sun – Partial shade
  • Diseases/Pests/Troubleshooting: Although Starmaker Series seeds thrive in heat, nicotiana is native to the humid tropics and not tolerant of drought and must stay consistently moist for proper flowering. Plants will show signs of wilting in long summers if not provided with shade. Nicotiana has no serious pests, but monitor regularly for beetles. Starmaker Series nicotiana belongs to the Solanaceae family and therefore susceptible to tobacco mosaic virus. Do not plant near vegetable gardens with other members of the nightshade family (i.e eggplant, tomato, potato, or peppers) because of susceptibility to common viruses.
  • Color: Signature choice of Appleblossom, Bright Red, Lime and Purple, Deep Lime, White, and Mix

Nicotiana alata is a species of tobacco plant native to southern Brazil and northern Argentina. Unlike many other species of the genus, Nicotiana alata is purely ornamental and used to produce many other ornamental cultivars and hybrids. The genus nicotiana honors 16th French ambassador Jean Nicot who is credited for having introduced tobacco to France.

Where it all starts
If you buy this you are about to start reading the greatest Batman run since... let's just say this is the greatest run on Batman. I may be over hyping this, the story arcs collected here are good on their own, but until you read the next volume and return to this one, your not getting the whole story. So it's hard to say how great this story is, and how great it gets. I would only get this if you plan on buying the other 7 Morriosn Batman books that follow this. Black Glove, RIP, Batman Reborn, Batman vs Robin, Time and the Batman, Return of Bruce Wayne, and Batman Must Die!. In that order. You'll have fun reading this run.

Visionary
If you're familiar with the work of Grant Morrison than you'll know this book was never intended to be read as a stand alone work. This is just the first few stories in a long run that culminate in Batman Inc. So, keep that in mind if you plan to jump on here. It's all or nothing. I'm always amazed with Morrison's ability to craft smart, universe encapsulating, severely polarizing stories in almost every one of his runs. His meticulous plotting, spot on characterization, and willingness to take chances are just three of the plethora of reasons to buy this book. If you like to be rewarded for paying attention and are looking for something more from your comics than "monster-of-the-week" this is for you.

I don't know, something's missing
I like the idea of Bruce Wayne being a dad - and with Ra's Al Ghul's daughter too. But is it just me or does it seem like there are gaps in the story; maybe there are other books in the story arc not in this graphic novel? When I got to the end of the book I was scratching my head saying "Is that it?" If you like Batman I suggest going to Forbidden Planet or your local comic shop and asking one of the people there to give you all the books around the arc so it makes sense.

A new Wayne
This book introduces Damian Wayne as the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul. Bruce does not allow Damian to be Robin in this story as Tim Drake still is. Plus Bruce does not like Damian's attitude toward Alfred and Tim. This story does help to show just how talented (and violent) the future Robin is though.
