Януш Корчак (справжнє ім’я Генрик Ґольдшмідт, 1878 або 1879—1942) — всесвітньо відомий польський педагог-новатор, лікар, письменник, автор праць з теорії і практики виховання, громадський діяч, зачинатель діяльності на захист прав дитини і повної рівноправності дітей. Мав змогу вийти живим з Варшавського гетто, але відмовився і загинув разом із своїми вихованцями у гітлерівському таборі смерті у Треблінці. 'Мацюсеві пригоди' вважають однією з найважливіших книжок дитячої літератури ХХ століття. Ця історія про маленького хлопчика Мацюся, який після смерті батька-короля посів трон і став королем Матіушем Першим, безумовно, казка, і дуже сумна казка, але водночас вона дуже справжня й правдива. І в ній зовсім не по-казковому, але в той же час просто і дохідливо розповідається про стосунки дітей зі світом дорослих, про державний устрій, про причини світових воєн і різних заворушень, про мудре державне управління, а ще про вірність та зраду друзів і про відповідальність за власні рішення. Ця книжка виходила друком й раніше, але з великими купюрами. Тепер ми маємо повну версію 'Мацюсевих пригод'.
