artist biography
Nils-Göran Brunner was born January 5, 1923 in Lund. He was a Swedish artist.
Brunner studied at the Konsthögskolan (Royal Academy of Arts) in Stockholm from 1949 to 1954. He took study trips to Paris in 1952 and to Paris and Rome in 1958.
He first exhibited in 1951 at exhibition hosted by the Skänes Konstförening (Art Association) in 1951. Following his debut he then entered the Exposition Internationale des Académies des Beaux Arts in Milan in 1953 and Berlin in 1954, Sweden Allmänna Konstförening in 1954 and 1957, 7 skâningar in Gothenburg 1959 and Halmstad 1960, and 8 skâningar in Stockholm 1961. Solo exhibitions included Petra Stockholm in 1957, Lilla Konstsalongen in Malmö in 1958, Färg och Form in Stockholm 1963, Krognoshuset in Lund in 1964 and Galerie Nordqvist in Malmö in 1967.
Brunner was the recipient of a number of scholarships and grants including Erik Sääf's scholarship in 1952, Bonnier's scholarship in 1955, Skänes Konstförening (Art Asociation) scholarship in 1958, Emil Berg's scholarship in 1958, Edstrandska stiftelsen's scholarship in 1960, Ellen Trotzig's scholarship in 1960, and the State's Större working grant in 1966 and 1967.
Brunner's painting is characterised by intimacy and lyricism. The paintings, predominantly in oil, often with impasto and on a small scale depict simple objects, such as a door or detail of a building, but also grand depictions of the Scanian landscape in Sweden. Examples of Brunner’s work are held in many public collections inlcuding the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Malmö Art Museum, the Regional Museum in Skåne (Kristianstad), Tomelilla Art Collection, and the Ystad Art Museum.
He was married to the artist Gyda Brunner (1925–1993). Brunner passed away on August 10, 1986 at the age of 63 in Lund.
