Acclaimed author Patricia O'Toole's "superb" (The New York Times) account of Woodrow Wilson, one of the most high-minded, consequential, and controversial US presidents. A "gripping" (USA TODAY) biography, The Moralist is "an essential contribution to presidential history" (Booklist, starred review).

"In graceful prose and deep scholarship, Patricia O'Toole casts new light on the presidency of Woodrow Wilson" (Star Tribune, Minneapolis). The Moralist shows how Wilson was a progressive who enjoyed unprecedented success in leveling the economic playing field, but he was behind the times on racial equality and women's suffrage. As a Southern boy during the Civil War, he knew the ravages of war, and as president he refused to lead the country into World War I until he was convinced that Germany posed a direct threat to the United States. Once committed, he was an admirable commander-in-chief, yet he also presided over the harshest suppression of political dissent in American history.

After the war Wilson became the world's most ardent champion of liberal internationalism--a democratic new world order committed to peace, collective security, and free trade. With Wilson's leadership, the governments at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 founded the League of Nations, a federation of the world's democracies. The creation of the League, Wilson's last great triumph, was quickly followed by two crushing blows: a paralyzing stroke and the rejection of the treaty that would have allowed the United States to join the League. Ultimately, Wilson's liberal internationalism was revived by Franklin D. Roosevelt and it has shaped American foreign relations--for better and worse--ever since.

A cautionary tale about the perils of moral vanity and American overreach in foreign affairs, The Moralist "does full justice to Wilson's complexities" (The Wall Street Journal).

A must read for public executives
Format: Paperback
Concise, focused, and full of real-world point and counterpoints, I found this to be more of an essential piece of oratory combat equipment than a book. As a non-lawyer working in public service, this book provides excellent points on interpretation, form versus substance, and the importance of observation and evidence – all skills needed to protect the public interest. As someone who monitors contracts in the public sector, many of my peers could benefit from this book and better design contracts to the advantage of their public entity. Incidentally, I was also involved in a heated discussion about data interpretation the same week I was reading this book, and was able to calmly defend and dominate the discussion until my opponent acquiesced. More important than dominating your opponent is the theme throughout this book that one’s argument must be genuine, and the logic tight. Additionally, as Prof. Trachtman reminds readers that these skills, like a weapon, should only be used for good. A great read!

What our kids need to hear
Format: Hardcover
This book says exactly what our kids need to hear in these confusing times. There are so many things that our children hear and see these days that it can be overwhelming and confusing. This book and the sweet illustrations make teaching our kids how lucky we are to live in the US so very easy and important. This is something we need to make sure our children appreciate and they will grow up proud to protect our freedoms afforded to us by so many. Love this book!

Simply Wonderful
Format: Hardcover
I Love America is a wonderful book to help children (along with the rest of us!) recognize and appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us by God, including our freedoms in all their forms, our remarkable veterans, and those that work so hard to make our nation what it is. The fun rhyming and adorable illustrations kept our boys glued to it the whole time. Highly, highly recommended.
