Abbott Handerson Thayer war ein amerikanischer Künstler, Naturforscher und Lehrer. Als Maler von Porträts, Figuren, Tieren und Landschaften genoss er zu Lebzeiten eine gewisse Bekanntheit, und seine Bilder sind in den wichtigsten amerikanischen Kunstsammlungen vertreten. Er entwickelte eine Technik zum Malen von Tieren, die sie natürlicher erscheinen ließ, und wurde während des Ersten Weltkriegs von der US-Armee wegen seiner Fachkenntnisse auf diesem Gebiet konsultiert.
