Diese Tiere können nur einmal alle zwei bis drei Jahre geschoren werden und da sie eine geschützte Art sind, muss die Schur nachhaltig und kontrolliert erfolgen, um die Tierpopulation nicht zu schädigen. Die Vicuña-Faser ist bemerkenswert fein, mit einem Durchmesser von etwa 12 Mikrometern, sogar feiner als Kaschmir.
